Gangs of New York

Gangs of New York Poster Image

If you thought goodfellas, casino, and the departed were really violent, this one is even worse, especially during the end where it's a full scale riot, a knock down drag out brawl, and a brutal massacre that had me thinking JEEZ LAWEEZ lol. anyway, Gangs Of New York is a great movie full of intense action, emotion, and great performances from everyone

Violent Scorsese film about legacy is naturally excellent

Though this film sometimes confused me in the many depictions of complex, political 19th century history, the heart of its story is not muddled at all. Revenge, faith and redemption are all common Scorsese themes, and how lucky are we that DiCaprio and Day-Lewis teamed up with the great director to tell them? Daniel Day-Lewis destroys as Bill the Butcher, a villain I will likely not be forgetting anytime soon. He's arrogant like a leader in his position, but he's also very weary of his own situation and morality. Plus that accent and that moustache is just icing on the cake. This isn't one of Leo's top performances, we've seen him be angry and confused before this, but he is very solid, as is his chemistry with Cameron Diaz, who CSM called out for being miscast, but I thought she was fine! Maybe she seems miscast because all she's really known for is rom-coms! The production design is lavish and beautiful, as is the wonderful, Oscar-nominated script. It's got Marty's prints all over it, and that ending montage is surely one of the most epic of his filmography.
